Important information
These calculators provide broad indicative ranges for planning only. They are not quotes, guarantees or financial advice and do not use live insurer pricing. Actual premiums can fall outside the range and depend on your health, lifestyle, occupation, chosen policy features and each insurer's underwriting criteria. This broad range is an indicative planning estimate, not a quote or guarantee. It does not use live insurer pricing. Medical history, lifestyle, occupation, policy features and underwriting can move the final premium outside this range. Model reviewed August 2026.
Understanding your options - Which type of protection is right for you?
Choosing the right protection insurance can feel overwhelming. Here is a quick guide to the three main types of cover and who they are best suited for.
- Life Insurance. Life insurance pays out a lump sum to your loved ones if you pass away during the policy term. It is ideal for anyone with a mortgage, dependants, or financial commitments that would need to be met in their absence. Cover can be set as level (fixed payout) or decreasing (reducing over time to match a repayment mortgage).
- Critical Illness Cover. Critical illness cover pays a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specified serious illness such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. It gives you the financial freedom to focus on recovery without worrying about bills, mortgage payments, or loss of earnings. Policies typically cover 40 to over 100 conditions.
- Income Protection. Income protection replaces a portion of your income — typically 50–65% — if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Unlike critical illness cover, it pays a regular monthly benefit rather than a one-off lump sum, and it can continue until you return to work, retire, or the policy ends.
What affects your premium?
Insurance premiums are calculated based on the level of risk an insurer takes on when covering you. Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions about your policy.
Age
Your age at the start of the policy is the single biggest factor. Premiums increase with age because the statistical risk of a claim rises. Taking out cover earlier typically means lower monthly costs for the life of the policy.
Smoking status
Smokers pay significantly higher premiums — often 50% to 100% more — due to the well-documented health risks associated with smoking. Most insurers classify you as a smoker if you have used any nicotine products in the last 12 months.
Health & medical history
Pre-existing conditions, family medical history, BMI, and lifestyle factors all influence your premium. Simply Zest specialises in placing cover for clients with complex medical histories who may have been declined elsewhere.
Cover amount & term
Higher cover amounts and longer policy terms increase your premium. It is important to balance affordability with adequate protection — our advisers can help you find the right level of cover for your circumstances.
Occupation
For income protection, your occupation is a key factor. Insurers group jobs into risk classes — office-based professionals pay less than manual workers because they have a lower statistical risk of injury or illness preventing them from working.
Deferred period
The deferred period is how long you wait before income protection benefits begin. A longer deferred period (e.g. 26 weeks vs 4 weeks) significantly reduces your premium. If your employer offers sick pay, you can align your deferred period to start when that ends.
Why use Simply Zest?
As an independent, whole-of-market brokerage, we are not tied to any single insurer. This means we search across every major UK provider to find the right policy for your needs — not the one that earns us the highest commission.
Our advice is completely free. We are paid by the insurer when a policy is placed, so there is never a fee to you for our time or expertise.
We specialise in cases that other brokers turn away. If you have a complex medical history, have been declined cover elsewhere, or simply need more guidance than a comparison website can offer, our team has the knowledge and insurer relationships to find solutions.

Insurance calculator FAQs
Understanding your indicative estimate
- How accurate are these insurance calculators?
- They provide broad planning ranges based on the details you enter and typical UK pricing relationships. They do not access live insurer systems, so only a fully underwritten application can produce an accurate premium.
- Why could my actual premium be different?
- Insurers also consider medical history, family history, BMI, occupation, travel, hazardous activities and detailed policy features. Each provider assesses those factors differently.
- How much income protection can I apply for?
- UK income protection commonly covers part of your earnings. This calculator uses a maximum of 65% of gross monthly income, but an insurer may use a lower limit or a different earnings definition.
- Is the result an insurance quote?
- No. It is an indicative estimate intended to help you understand possible costs. Simply Zest can compare suitable insurers and provide a personalised quote after discussing your circumstances.
